I believe I have realized that a good written translation requires the interaction of four essential elements, which include enthusiasm, knowledge, resources, and skills. Each of these consists of more detailed sections, which I will mention here, according to my own understanding.

From the above four elements three are easier to identify, which are knowledge, resources, and enthusiasm. Let’s begin with enthusiasm. Enthusiasm could mean that you should take interest in the topic you are translating and that you are eager to know what exactly is going on in the original document. This will speed up your work and keep you focused. After enthusiasm comes knowledge. You need good knowledge of the two languages including their vocabulary and grammatical flexibilities as well as their formal and informal methods of communication. Besides enthusiasm and knowledge, you also require access to good valuable resources, such as electronic dictionaries and thesauri, and a spreadsheet document where you can keep track of new technical terms you have learned during your translation which you will constantly need access to. Among other resources are field-experts whom you can consult when having difficulty understanding a section of the original writing. On top of enthusiasm, knowledge, and resources, there is the element of skill. Skills are inter-related with knowledge, use of resources, and your Enthusiasm.

Skills in my belief, join the other three elements mentioned above. Skills such as good time management and work-logging, setting a suitable environment, and access to various resources in an efficient way are important. For example you may need to know how many pages of writing you are able to translate through a certain period of time and then keep up with it, while needing a comfortable environment for your translation work, not to mention your way of accessing the material you need during your translation. All of these contribute to the betterment of your work process before, during, and after your translation is officially done.

Let’s have a quick case-study, where I show my work as an example. I will provide this in the next part. Here, I translate psychology articles from Farsi to English for the Ministry of Education in their Quarterly Journal titled “Quarterly Journal of Educational Innovations”. In this case study I will demonstrate how each of the elements of enthusiasm, knowledge, resources, and skills apparently help me go through my translations easier, I also ask myself how I can improve my work by having more focus on these four elements, or basically any valuable factor or element which will improve my art and technique of translation in this specialized field.

My Poem 3: The beautiful older sister

Here is my latest poem.

The beautiful older sister

Let the sun of wisdom shine,
while coldness assumes power,
while its daughters prefer silence.
If wisdom be your state of mind,
you have an older sister terribly kind.

Let your sister brighten your life.
Let her patience strengthen it up.
Let her breath freshen you up.
Let her good works prove you right.
And then…
Let its calmness raise you up,
to the happy morning by the sun.

Let the sun of wisdom shine.
And in the dark times you will find,
the help of a passionate older sister,
who makes you shine, to carry on.

My Poem 2: When embracing all smiles becomes difficult

This is a poem I wrote today when I thought of how beautiful meeting all my friends was and how I was short of strength to spend enough time with all of them.

When embracing all smiles becomes difficult

[I want to embrace them.]
To the wiser part of me,
the familiar smiles around I see,
are all the numerous interpretations,
to the one single unique truth,
I so desperately try to see.

[I want to define it.]
To the assumed-intelligent side of me,
I hold my truth, the truth holds infinite mes.
The only one “me” possible to trust for sure,
my own self, my own faith,
what my own eyes exactly see.

[I must conclude.]
To the experienced side of me,
seeing smiles in all, all smiles in me,

is so big it becomes tragically unbearable.

[And I conclude.]
To the concluding side of me,
I will live, love, and let go of tragedies.

My Poem 1: Leading while loving

Today I really felt like writing a poem. I’m a novice but look forward to improving my techniques. I am looking forward to your suggestions and comments. I know there are good sites on the Net for this purpose. Perhaps I will strengthen myself. :-)

To my family, great husbands and wives, and all lovers…

Leading while loving

I see you and I feel like flying.
but I can’t.
I reach for you and I imagine a bird…
Open your window.
Will you not say yes and see my faith?

For my bird and yours to form, to love, to fly,
two wings are needed.

Imagine…

My bird has two wings and yours has too.
We are two,
plus the wings of the new one,
shaping,
which will soar,
which will lead on,
to join another bird, another way,
being the bird of:
leading while loving.
